Tabs,Meg And The Strange Man.

Oh what a lovely morning it was. The sun was shining down on Redroofs Farm and all the animals that lived there.
"Hello, lazy bones," said Tabs to Meg as they woke up in their warm beds in the barn. The sun was shining through the gaps in the door. Out they both went into the sunshine, where Jack the farmer was brushing the farmyard and Ben the sheepdog was lying in the sun. They had been up very early gathering the cows together and bringing them down into the milking parlour. They walked past Ben quietly he got very grumpy if he was disturbed!!
"Let's go for a walk up to the "top field," said Tabs to her kitten. Off they both went. The kittens say good morning to Gertie the cow as she was munching happily on the grass in the "bottom field," "Good morning," she moos back at them.
Captain the horse neighs a quick hello before going back to munch the juicy grass in the "middle field."

Finally they arrive at the "top field," They liked coming here because there were lots of field mice, butterflies and grasshoppers to play with, but what on earth was this??!!!! In the middle of the field stood a very strange man.
"Who is he?" Meg asked her mother. "I've got no idea!" replied a very puzzled looking Tabs.
They very, very slowly crept up nearer to him! Oh dear he did look very strange indeed!! He wasn't moving and his clothes were in tatters!! "He must be very ill let's go and get everyone up here to se if we can help him," said Tabs.
They ran back to the farm as fast as their little legs could carry them and they were so out of breath when they got there that they could hardly get their words out!! There was no sign of Jack the farmer so they run up to Ben the sheepdog forgetting in their excitement that he didn't like to be disturbed.
"Ppppleease Bben can yyou hhelp us, ththere' a ssstrange man up in the "top field" and he looks really ill!!" Ben without a second thought jumped to his feet “I think you had both better sit down and get your breath back!! After a couple of minutes rest Ben said "Off we go then to help this man!"
Their second stop was at the pigsty where Porky pig was munching away happily at his breakfast.
"Please Porky, there's a man up in the "top field" and he looks really ill!" "Can you come with us to try and help him!!" asked the cats. As fast as he could Porky waddled out of the sty. “Come on then my friends there's no time to waste!"
Next they arrived at the "bottom field," where Gertie the cow was munching on the fresh juicy grass. "Quick Gertie!" the four friends shouted," There's a strange man up in the "top field" and he's really ill, we’ve got to try and help him!" "Off we go then!" mooed Gertie forgetting all about the grass she'd been eating in concern for this strange man who seemed to be very ill!!
Next they come to the "middle field" where Captain the horse was having a canter around in the morning sun. As soon as he saw them all he trotted over to the gate. "What's wrong, why are you all looking so worried?" "Please come and help us, there’s a man up in the "top field" and he's really ill," they all chant together. "I'm on my way, off we go," neighs Captain

The friends marched up to the "top field" like a line of soldiers and stood by the gate looking over at the man!! They all agreed that he looks very ill.
"C'mon!" meowed Tabs and Meg “Let’s go and see if we can help him." They all stood in front of him, but the strange man did not look at them, he just carried on looking straight ahead!
"What on earth is wrong with him? barked Ben.
"His clothes are like rags," mooed Gertie. .
Let's try and do some tricks," suggested Captain, "He's sure to laugh and then he'll have to move!"
"That's a good idea, snorted Porky ," in agreement.
"We'll go first then," meowed the cats.. They both stood on their hind legs and pretend to box each other. They ended up on top of each other on the ground."Haaa, Haaa. Hooo" The friends all laughed till their sides were aching at these funny capers, but did the man laugh? No he did not; he just carried on looking straight ahead!
"I'll go next," snorted Porky, and lay on his back wriggle led from side to side with his little trotters sticking up in the air. Again they were all doubled up with laughter, but did the man laugh?
No he did not; he just carried on looking straight ahead!
"I'll go next” said Gertie.
So she walked around wriggling her bottom and looking very silly and all the friends were rolling about laughing!

No he just carried on looking straight ahead.
"I'll go next," neighs Captain, and stood on his hind legs and walked around the man. Once again all the friends are cheering, clapping and laughing really loud, but did the man laugh? No he just carried on looking straight ahead!
"It's my turn now," barks Ben. "I'm going to jump over that seat and he'll be so surprised that he's sure to smile!"
So Ben jumped over the seat, but did the strange man smile??
No he just carried on looking straight ahead of him!!!!
The animals looked at each other helplessly and shook their heads sadly! What on earth was wrong with this strange man?
Suddenly they heard footsteps behind them; they all turned round to see Jack the farmer walking towards them.
Tabs and Meg went running up to him;
"Oh Jack we are so pleased to see you," “Have you seen this man?” "He's not moving or talking and his clothes are like rags!!" He must be very, very ill!!"
Jack looked at the 'strange man' and at the friends for a moment before bursting into laughter, and he laughed and laughed till he could laugh no more!!

The friends just stared at him in amazement!! What on earth was wrong with Jack? He must be very, very ill as well!!
Finally Jack stopped laughing and turned to the animals. "You silly lot, he’s not a man whose ill, he’s a scarecrow!!I put him there to stop the birds from eating my crops!"
He began to laugh at himself again as he walked out of the field 'A man whose ill indeed!! Ha ha ha!!'
Behind him followed six animals with heads held low and feeling very silly indeed!
The two cats went into the barn to rest after their busy morning still feeling very, very silly!! After a while they both ventured out to the farmyard hoping the warm sunshine would make them feel a bit happier.
It would have done except for Jack laughing at them every time he saw them!!
The remainder of the day passed quietly and it was soon nigh time and time to go back to their beds in the barn.
Night time came and just as they were about to say goodnight to each other by the Aga in the kitchen of Redroofs Farm but suddenly the door opened and there stood Jack holding a big jug.
He went over to their bowls and poured something into them.
"There you are, some nice creamy milk for you both," he said to them.
"You might have made a mistake about the scarecrow this morning, but you were good, kind cats to care in the first place." He patted them both on the head before he went on his way.
Both cats drank the nice creamy milk greedily and their bowls were soon empty and tummies were very full. There were two very happy kittens that were curled up in their beds that night.
I love you Tabs meowed Meg !!
I love you too Meg answered Tabs !!.

Almost instantly that's all that could be heard from the kitchen was two cats purring away happily.
Goodnight Tabs and goodnight Meg .
